Desperate for a last hope type of lift in Iowa, Republican Michele Bachmann is increasingly stressing a distinction in the presidential field: She's the only woman competing for the nomination.
The
Minnesota congresswoman has made the gender card central to her closing
argument. She's urging voters to agree with her, the idea of a "strong woman in
the White House" and is molding herself as "America's Iron Lady" as the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
It's
a play that carries as much risk as potential reward because some of
the religious conservatives she's aggressively calling upon have
traditional views about gender roles.
UPDATE 1/04/12
Michele Bachmann announced her exit from the presidential race Wednesday morning following a sixth-place finish in the first-in-the-nation caucus state of Iowa.
"Last night, the people of Iowa spoke with a very clear voice. And so I have decided to stand aside," the Republican representative from Minnesota told reporters during a morning media availability here at the Marriott hotel.
