fish die in Xuan Huong Lake, Da Lat's iconic lake, Vietnam
Many visitors complained that they could not take the stench of the fish as they walked around the lake, near Ong Dao Bridge.
Of the hundreds of dead fish, the biggest weighed around 0.7kg, a witness said.
Some locals say that dead fish suddenly started showing up after Tet ( the Lunar New Year Holiday).
Le Xuan Tham, deputy director of Lam Dong’s Department of Science and Technology, says it is possible that the deceased fish did not live in the lake but originated from waters upstream.
However, local residents say the wastewater from households and factories upstream is the culprit.
Since local authorities spent dozens of billions of dong on tackling water pollution in the lake in 2010, blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) has been spotted frequently and the lake has been filled with its unpleasant smell.
