Serena Williams loses to Russia's Ekaterina Makarova

The Russian world number 56, who had not won a main-draw match since  August 2011 and before arriving in Melbourne, was expected to provide nothing more than an obstacle for the five-time champion.

But she instead,  surprisingly, Makarova, 23, who had earlier upset seventh seed Vera Zvonareva, sent Serena packing for one of her worst losses at a grand slam tournament
